''While involved in the first part of my golfing career, playing professionally on various mini tours, I had two underlying questions. Why do I do what I do? And how do I go about improving it?

The search for the answers to my questions allowed me to develop a real love for understanding as much as I could about golf swing technique and how improving the movement of the human body would allow me to see changes on the golf course. The journey has evolved into a coaching career where I help both golfers and other coaches to understand, in the case of the golfer, how to move and play better, and in the case of the coach, how to better understand the player in front of them.''

rich's Story

Rich graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2006, completing the AGMS degree programme alongside his PGA coaching qualifications. Following on from university, whilst on the journey of improvement as a player, Rich crossed paths with two coaches who would heavily influence his path in the industry. The first was Hugh Marr and the second was Dr. Mark Bull.

Hugh is a world class coach who continues to work with players at the highest level with wins across all leading tours. As a playing professional Rich was exposed to the world of elite golf coaching while working with Hugh, an experience that was to consequently shape his future approach as a coach. Rich recently completed Hugh's Coaching Mastery Programme (CMAS) and continues to value his mentorship.

Dr. Mark Bull is one of the world's leading biomechanics experts who designed and developed Bull3D, a motion capture system that allows exploration into how someone moves and performs during their golf swing. The system highlights where advancements and improvements can be made and helps to locate any problematic areas that may relate to pain or injury. Rich started working with Mark whilst playing professionally and continues through ownership and use of a Bull3D system allowing him to assess and measure players leading to evaluation of the best course of action for each individual.

As a coach Rich draws from not only his experiences in golf, but also having been actively involved with football, rugby, hockey, tennis, basketball and rowing. An ongoing interest in all sporting performance led Rich to explore how to improve human movement. Rich studied at the National Personal Training Institute (NPTI) in Orlando and has recently been investing in his learning with Functional Patterns, a company that has an approach focusing training on how humans evolved to move. Functional Patterns' approach continues to produce exceptional results in helping people with their posture, to be more capable movers and to escape pain or injury.

Functional Patterns works around the hierarchy of human movement; standing, walking, running and throwing, providing assessments and correctives to optimize how people move at a fundamental level. Rich offers private one-to-one training, group training and online training to correct imbalances and dysfunctions and restore function to his clients. Rich works around the philosophy of looking at the human first, seeing how capable an individual is of fundamental human movement and then improving on it to make them a more capable human and consequently a more capable golfer.

Rich works with all ages and all abilities, from beginner to professional, including the Warwickshire County squads. While based at two facilities in Warwickshire, at Stonebridge Golf club on Sundays and Mondays for golf coaching and all golf assessments, and at private training space in Stoneleigh for all posture and movement assessments and other training, there is also scope for Rich to travel subject to requirements.
